LPG Prices to Rise by ₹50 per Cylinder from Tomorrow: Oil Minister

Starting April 8, 2025, cooking gas is set to become more expensive for Indian households. Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas, Hardeep Singh Puri, announced that the price of LPG cylinders will be hiked by ₹50 across the board.

Who Does This Affect?

The hike applies to both Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) beneficiaries and general consumers:

  • PMUY beneficiaries: Price increases from ₹500 to ₹550 per 14.2-kg cylinder.
  • General category consumers: Price goes up from ₹803 to ₹853 per cylinder.

Why the Hike?

This price revision follows a sharp spike in global LPG prices, which surged from $415 to $712 per metric tonne. According to Minister Puri, oil marketing companies (OMCs) have been absorbing these rising costs for some time. The ₹50 increase aims to partially offset their losses, though it won’t fully cover past under-recoveries.

The Ministry of Petroleum is also expected to approach the Finance Ministry to help manage the shortfall.

Will Prices Keep Changing?

Yes, possibly. The minister confirmed that LPG prices will be reviewed every 2–3 weeks, depending on fluctuations in international markets. This means consumers may continue to see price adjustments in the near future.

Additional News

In a related move, the government has also raised the excise duty on petrol and diesel by ₹2 per litre. However, the minister assured that this will not affect retail prices at the pump, as it is meant to stabilize the finances of OMCs.

Bottom Line:
If you’re planning a refill, expect to pay ₹50 more starting tomorrow. While the government cites global pricing pressures, the impact on household budgets is bound to be felt — especially in lower-income and rural households.
